Administrative formalities
Here is a very complete document about the administrative formalities required of a foreign scientist to come to France and about the procedure of obtaining the resident's permit(carte de sejour). The resident's permit is necessary for stays longer than 3 months, except for nationals of the original 15 European Union countries, European Economic Zone, Monaco, Andorra and the Swiss Confederation (suppression of the residency permit, law of 17 Marember 2003). The administrative formalities for obtaining the resident's permit have been greatly simplified since 1998 by the creation of a "scientist" category. Check out also this link(french) for more information concerning the procedure. The documents required for the first request of a "scientist" resident's permit are:
  • Passport and photocopy in particular of the pages containing the personal data, the visa and the stamp marking the date of entry onto French soil
  • Protocole d'accueil, certified by the host institution's stamp
  • Photocopy of a proof of residence in France, in other words, a proof of accommodation such as a housing contract or a bill(electricity, gas or telephone account)
You must address to the Foreigners Department at the Prefecture of the department in which you live. Essonne's prefecture. More information (in French) can be found here
French courses
  • Free French courses for the foreign researchers who stay more than 3 months are organized by "Science accueil" association. If you are interested sent an e-mail to science-accueil@saclay-scientipole.org
  • To learn French or improve communication in French, ALFAP proposes collective French courses (beginner, intermediate, advanced levels) in the afternoon and in the evening, in Bures-sur-Yvette. To extend knowledge of French culture, ALFAP plans French cooking workshops and discovery walks in Paris or hiking in the near country and forests.
